Meet the Halloween & Día de los Muertos Costumes: Taro & Friends Get Dressed Up.

Meet the Costumes: Taro & Friends Get Dressed Up

Our OG crew is decked out in some fun, thoughtful, Australian and Mexican inspired costumes this year:

  • Taro the Fairy Penguin is buzzing as “The Great Bee-Liever” giving a nod to the important role native Australian bees in our eco-systems.

  • Aunty Winter Pearl is celebrating Dia de los Muertos as “La Catrina of Kindness”. La Catrina is a stunningly dressed skeleton figure and an important symbol of this Mexican celebration, reminding us that life and death are a natural part of life.

  • Bubbles the Koala is sweet and adorable as “The Bubbly Boba Queen”. Bubble tea is a favourite of Taro and the gang and when you put Bubbles and Bubble Tea together – iconic!

  • Ace the Kelpie is showing his heroic spirit as a “Wildlife Wonder Rescuer”. Kelpies are hard working dogs, and together with his loyal crew, they are committed to protecting our Australian native animals.

  • Cash the Green Snake is slithering in as the “Flying Fox of Fortune” (also known as fruit bats) who are also vital pollinators in Australia.
  • Sydney the Rainbow Lorikeet is ready to party as “Techno-Saurus Rex”. Our loud talkative friend is perfect for a high-energy, technology loving dinosaur!

New Friends, More Fun: Building the Aussie Crew

We also have some of our other Aussie mates joining the festivities in classic spooky styles:

  • Tino the Murray River Turtle is an adorable ghost. Did you know the Murray River Turtle is one of Australia’s largest freshwater turtles?

  • Storm the Brumby is a fantastic skeleton. Brumbies are a symbol of the Australian bush and look majestic even as a spooky skeleton!

  • Remi the Glossy Black Cockatoo is wearing a little pumpkin hat. This endangered bird is a precious sight, and we love seeing them included in the fun.

  • Spike the Echidna is a cute and prickly ghost with a bow tie! Echidnas are one of only two egg-laying mammals in the world (also known as monotremes). The other mammal is the Platypus and we are so lucky to have them as Australian native animals.

Why We Celebrate: A Quick Peek into History & Culture

  • Halloween Fun Facts: Halloween started centuries ago with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the end of summer and harvest. People lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off ghosts. Now, it’s a night for trick-or-treating and fun, usually on the 31st of October.

  • Dia de los Muertos Meaning: Dia de los Muertos is a vibrant Mexican holiday where families remember and honour their deceased loved ones. It’s a joyful celebration of life, not a sad day. Families build ofrendas (altars) with photos, favourite foods, and bright marigolds to welcome spirits home for a visit. This celebration can happen early November and will sometimes take weeks leading up to the main event. Read more about these events on our last blog post.

Taro and Friends show us that learning about different cultures can be exciting and enriching. We hope you and your family have a wonderful time celebrating, learning, and perhaps even dressing up. Bring the party home! Shop our Halloween & Dia de los Muertos Colouring Bundles now!
